GET YOUR KICKS in 2066

a flat packable immersive installation with performance and film

KICKS is an evolving satirical work, set in the imagined dystopian year of 2066.

Which revolves around three main sources of creative nutrients - sex, capitalism + climate change.

Conveyed through immersive structure, projection video work + performance that engages with the audience.

Stemming from eco-anxiety and fear of where capitalism is taking us, the beginnings of KICKS were when I read about the Thwaites Glacier - nicknamed the Doom Glacier. Though the work riffs on a cheeky almost blasé exterior, it is formed from very real and very valid climate worry.

This work is entirely flat packable, it started with ideas of utilising rip stop fabric but as I want to bring the piece to festivals I quickly realised that it would get mistaken for someone’s actual tent. I then settled on polycarbonate which is durable and light, then vinylled over to give a slick futuristic look. The aesthetic is heavily influenced by retro futurism, making the costume feel like it’s not too far away but also layered with nostalgia for the past. The sleekness of the piece is again, offset with trash where the performer stands, highlighting rising sea levels whilst they perform a ‘peep show’.

Foucault’s ‘The Will to Knowledge - The History of Sexuality: 1’ commentary on how sexual repression and heteronormative family structures are still so prevalent as they support the capitalistic narrative of making workers whilst keeping space from pleasure politics. If we did survive over the next few decades, what would our world look like?

With the continued protection of the 1% by politicians, would democracy exist, or will it have been bought out by corporations? Will we have Wi-Fi if we are semi submerged from rising sea levels? In which case how would the proletariats get their ‘kicks.’ Peep shows are on the rise but instead of nudity, it is human interaction that is for sale in an increasingly isolated world. All these led me to explore how you GET YOUR KICKS IN 2066.
